This week sees the eighth annual Gas Safety Week take place. The aim is simple; to raise awareness of the dangers of poorly maintained gas appliances which can cause a magnitude of issues including gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning to name a few.
Here at Ezytrac Property Management, we want both our clients (landlords) and tenants to have peace of mind when it comes to tenant safety. We arrange for the Gas Safety Checks to be completed annually to ensure any properties with a supply of gas are safe. If any issues were to stem from these checks, we would then endeavour to get the issue sorted within 24 hours to avoid any serious incidents occurring.
This year, Gas Safe Register is changing their approach for Gas Safety Week. They’ll be addressing a whole range of gas safety matters throughout the week, from tackling illegal gas works to reminding people to avoid DIY when it comes to gas appliances and instead leave it to the experts – registered engineers who are legally qualified to make sure your appliances are working safely and efficiently.
There’ll be lots of advice on offer during the course of the week, but here are some handy tips/facts we think tenants and landlords alike should know;
– The symptoms of CO poisoning – headaches, nausea, breathlessness, collapse, dizziness and loss of consciousness. Should you ever start to suffer from any of these symptoms, please seek medical advice.
– If you ever smell gas or think there might be a gas leak, you should call the free 24-hour national gas emergency number immediately on 0800 111 999 who will send out a qualified engineer usually on the same day.
– Always ask to see the engineer’s Gas Safe ID card before work is commenced. If an engineer is scheduled for when a tenant is in, they too should check for an ID card. Be sure to check the back of the card too, which will state which gas appliances they are qualified to work on.
– We only employ suitably qualified Gas Safe registered engineers when having gas work carried out on your property. Gas Safe Register is the official register for legally qualified engineers. To ensure we abide by this advice, we check the Gas Safe Register whenever adding contractors on to our approved contractor’s list. For peace of mind, you can check any engineer out here: www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk or by calling on 0800 408 5500.
