How To Defrost Your Fridge Freezer
At some point, you may find your fridge freezer is full of ice. This is usually caused by condensation build-up from opening and closing the freezer door. Over time, this ice can crowd your freezer space and make it difficult to store food.
As a tenant, you are responsible for keeping your residential rental clean and well-maintained. Luckily, defrosting and draining your fridge freezer is a fairly simple if laborious process.
As part of your Tenancy Agreement, undertaking minor repairs and maintenance to the property includes defrosting and draining your fridge freezer. You may think that defrosting your freezer seems like too much trouble but in fact, it is simple to do. Of course, you can call a contractor to do it but this will likely cost £80 upwards.
The video and the steps below are not specific to a single brand; they are a basic guide that you can use to defrost and drain your fridge freezer.
Defrosting And Draining Your Fridge Freezer
Before you begin, be sure to check your owner's manual or the manufacturer's guidelines for defrosting your fridge freezer. Generally, you only do a defrost and drain once every six months, but your manual should be able to provide you with the specific guidelines, as these are simply basic tips that may apply no matter the brand of the fridge that you have.
Step 1: Switch off your fridge at the mains before defrosting.
Step 2: Remove the drawers and food from your fridge. You don't want any of this getting in the way or getting damaged during the defrosting process.
Step 3: Do not use a knife or any sharpened or pointed object to remove the ice. You can cause damage to your freezer, as well as injure yourself. Just let the ice melt away.
Step 4: Place a pan on top of an old towel, at the bottom of the front edge of your refrigerator to catch the water draining out. Don't forget to place more old towels around your fridge to soak up the water draining out.
Step 5: Once the ice has melted, clean your freezer with antibacterial or washing liquid using a sponge and cloth. Rinse and dry afterwards.
Step 6: Return all the drawers and the food to the fridge freezer.
Step 7: Turn on your fridge at the mains and you're good to go.
